Tea and Textiles with Caroline (Who is Caroline? She’s the young seamstress from our Penn Dry Goods Market logo! Tea and Textiles is the autumn version of our Penn Dry Goods Market Textile History Lecture Series.)
This October we have an exciting new virtual lecture series planned for you—Tea and Textiles with Caroline, on Saturday, October 16, starting at 1:00 pm EST.
Lectures are approximately 1 hour long and include time for questions. Note: These lectures are Zoom only.
Tickets are $20 per lecture or $50 for all three. The links will be available for a month following October 16, so no worries if you can’t attend the live lecture—you’ll be able to watch at your convenience. Based on the success and feedback for our Penn Dry Goods Market lectures this year, we expect these lectures to be equally as terrific.
As an extra treat, we’ll be sending along some tea and specially selected cookie recipes closer to the time of the event.

A Sampling of Hunterdon County Needlework
Marty Campanelli, Independent Textile Scholar
As a fairly rural farming community in the late 1700s and early 1800s, Hunterdon County, New Jersey was surprisingly home to a number of diverse sampler groups. Join Marty Campanelli as she takes you on a tour of the County's various sampler styles including the now recognized 'collared deer' school, Eliza Rue's School in Pennington, the 'Redington' School, and the 'Hunterdon House & Heart' samplers taught by instructresses Amy and Elizabeth Lundy. New research on these groups, the instructresses who taught the designs, and a selection of sampler maker's life stories will round out the lecture. Marty's detective work also will show how some of the designs came to Hunterdon and where they migrated to afterwards. - $20
2:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Sudbury Hall Girls School Samplers
Claudia Dutcher Kistler, Designer and Sampler Historian
Sudbury Hall School for girls, located near London where Wembley Stadium is today, was founded to "provide a home and industrial training for homeless and destitute girls, who would otherwise be in danger of becoming criminals." These girls produced some uniquely distinctive samplers featuring designs often seen in Victorian punched paper bookmarks [1860 – 1885]. You don't often see designs intended to be worked on perforated paper included in a fabric sampler. Join Claudia as she shares with you the samplers from Sudbury Hall School, the stories of the girls who stitched them, a little history about the school, and how these designs tie in with perforated paper needlework. - $20
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Lo Hizo: Mexican Samplers and Their Makers, 1770-1870
Dr. Lynne Anderson, Director of the Sampler Archive Project, and founder of the Sampler Consortium with Mayela Flores, Lecturer in the Art Department of the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City
Mexico has a long history of blending cultures, both indigenous and foreign. In this presentation, Lynne Anderson and Mayela Flores explore the diverse historical and political influences on Mexican samplers (known in Mexico as "dechados"), illustrating each with images of distinctive motifs, needlework techniques, and overall designs. They also will highlight visually distinct groups of Mexican samplers, discussing the social, historical, and educational contexts in which they were created as well as the interesting lives of some of the girls and young women who created them. - $20
