Cadette- Badge Workshops

Book Artist Badge

$8.00; all day Saturday 10am-2pm or 4 hours divided between two days. Call for scheduling opportunities.

We’ll begin with a behind the scenes tour of our archive. We'll present how we store our old and rare books, provide highlights of some of bindings- including book covers, as well as highlight some of our more valuable books. Scouts will be able to identify different types of bindings. Back in the classroom we’ll continue to identify book parts, as well as take a book apart. We’ll look at one example of a paste paper bound book, made from painted paste and make our own paste paper. We’ll review techniques to make books and define techniques as fold & cut, glue binding, and stitching, as well as use terms like single signature stitch, five stitch, and single section case binding (hard cover). Some minor sewing is involved. Scouts will make more than one book during the workshop: one sewn soft cover and one hard cover or case bound book.

Service projects can be completed at the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center but must be scheduled on an individual scout basis, outside of workshop time. Service projects are available at no additional charge per scout. We offer many different volunteer opportunities for scouts!
